Why is my older beagle's eyelid drooping? Does she need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

My older beagle/basset started having just one lower lid droop - it’s a bottom lid AND the bottom membrane around her eyeball which are drooping. Nothing is red or swollen, and it doesn’t seem to irritate her. It’s a little beyond the normal beagle eye droop and have never seen either eye do this before. Does this require medical attention, or just some saline to keep clean?

This is a condition known as ectropion, which is not uncommon with beagles and other hounds. This is usually OK as long as there are no problems. If she does happen to have eye issues in the future, then there are surgical procedures to easily correct this. I hope that helps and Ginger gets better soon.
