My dog regurgitates food and chokes. Is this a serious problem?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 7 years and 2 months old | 3.75 lbs

My dog regurgitates everything she eats. The food sometimes get caught in her throat and she stops breathing, falls over,. we pat her on the back and she seems fine. Done this for 7+ yrs. 3 wks ago grounded her food, 4 days no problems, she was happy. Still grounding, she is back to her old ways, not happy. Should I worry?

I would definitely be worried about this. It appears that you have managed this well over the years, but without treatment, this can lead to her choking. Considering this has been going on her whole life, it's likely due to some congenital deformity involving her esophagus. There are usually good treatment options for the various defects that can occur in the esophagus, so it's worth getting her specific condition diagnosed. For this, you will need to schedule an appointment with a veterinarian, who will likely want to do a few tests to find the cause of the regurgitation. I hope that helps and Olivia gets better soon.
