Why is my spayed dachshund's nipple swollen, painful, and growing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 6 years and 11 months old | 14 lbs

My 6 year old female dachshund has had a nipple swell up. I noticed it when she was about 4 and didn't stress about it since it didn't seem to hurt her or grow. Well recently I have noticed that she does jump when it's touched and it has slightly grown. She seems completely healthy other being slightly overweight. Wondering what the cause may be. She is also spayed.

I would recommend taking Gracie to the veterinarian when they open after New Years. It is hard to say exactly what it is without seeing Gracie. I would recommend if your veterinarian is concerned when they see her that an aspirate be performed if it is a growth. Have a good New Years and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
