My dog has worms. Is just one deworming tablet enough to treat them?

Hi if my dog has worms and I only give him the tablet now will he still be grand ?

It really depends on the type of worms he has. Different worms require different treatment, so I always recommend that you only give deworming medication as directed by your veterinarian for the best outcome. This would depend on the medication as well as the type of intestinal parasites that were observed. Discuss an appropriate dose of dewormer with your veterinarian if it will treat the same ones seen in the clinic.

Starting Maddox on a deworming treatment was a good idea and considering the worm he threw up was long, it's likely he has roundworms. An OTC dewormer will kill them. He will need another deworming treatment two weeks after this one to kill all the worms present. After that, he will need to be dewormed every three months.

I dewormed leo today because he had soft stool for 2 days and a live worm came out one time and after deworming ,quite a few dead worms came out. so the vet recommended to continue deworming for next 2 or 3 days. is that ok to continue deworm him? or
The frequency of treatment depends on the product used - some are recommended for use daily for 3-10days depending on the amount of worms and previous treatment, some should only be used every 2-4weeks. Contact your vets office to confirm the prescribed dose and frequency for the product you have. Pups should be dewormed at least monthly until 6 months of age and then every 1-3months depending on where you live and local parasite risks

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! There are many ways to treat things that are all appropriate. The dose of dewormer is weight dependent so if the same drug was used it is likely the new dog weighs more or they used a different dewormer. A lot of vets use the heart worm prevention as a dewormer because it also takes care of intestinal parasites. It is really Vet preference. I hope this helps!

Hi, it is fine to give the two tablets together as a single dose. The dose is accurate for a 20 kg dog, how often your repeat it will depend on how frequently he comes in contact with parasites. If there are lots of worms in the environment, he could be wormed every 3 months but I would double check with your vet. Hope this helps !

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This means that Ace would benefit from being started on another dose of deworming medications. The best medication for this is usually chosen based on a fecal examination to determine which parasite is affecting Ace. The same deworming medication can be given to your other dog. It depends which type of worms but they typically have dewormers at pet stores with a dose bybeeight and directions and when to repeat but if they are tapeworms ( small like rice) then you need to provide flea prevention also

Whenever we give my dog his wormer he is sick about 3 hours after. Does it still work. Which wormer should i use in future to keep him protected?
If your dog is sick three hours after giving the worming treatment, this should be sufficient time for the worming treatment to be absorbed. To err on the side of caution, if your dog is known to be infested with worms, it might be a good idea to re-treat him in a week's time with a different product. I'm not sure which product you are currently using, but I recommend using Drontal. You can get a Drontal tablet from your vet. If that doesn't make him sick, you can use it as your regular worming treatment.

It depends on what type of parasites he has. Different parasites are infective in different ways. For instance, tapeworms are infective after the pet ingests a flea, while Hookworms can be found in the environment (soil). So just because a pet is dewormed one time, the current worm load is removed from their system, but then that same pet can be re-infected at a later date if exposed to the worms again. So the preventative measure again depends on the type of worm that your pet was found to have been infected with. Also, just to note. Most worm infections require a 2nd dose in 2 weeks, because of the worms life cycle, except for Tapeworm infestations. I'm not sure what deworming treatment you used, but if it didn't contain praziquantel, then it will not kill tapeworms if Willow has them. Tapeworms require praziquantel to kill. In addition, the life cycle of intestinal worms is around 2-3 weeks, so when a puppy does have worms, he needs to initially be dewormed every two weeks at first to kill all the worms. The first treatment kills the adults present while the second one kills the worms that had not yet hatched at the time of the first treatment. After that, he can be dewormed monthly. I would give him another deworming treatment now, one that includes praziquantel such as Drontal. Give him another dose in two weeks, and then deworm him monthly until he is six months old. After that, he should be dewormed every three months. As a side note, it is never recommended to give dogs pork. It sounds as though you've done everything correctly by starting a dewormer after finding worms in George's stool. Some worms only shed intermittently, so it is not uncommon to only find worms once in a while. Remember that not every dewormer treats every type of worm. If the worms you found were long and flat or spaghetti-like, they may have been either roundworms or hookworms. Tapeworms tend to resemble grains of rice. Roundworms and hookworms are treated with most over the counter dewormers, including those containing pyrantel pamoate or fenbendazole. Tapeworms can be a bit trickier to kill, and are best treated with praziquantel-containing dewormers. I typically deworm twice, three weeks apart. If you notice any other issues, it may be worth taking a stool sample to George's vet to confirm that no microscopic parasites are also present. I hope that all goes well!
