My budgie is straining to lay an egg. What should I do to help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 11 months old

Hi, I think my budgie is having trouble laying an egg. How long does it take for her to actually pass the egg? She is a single female 6yrs old. Never been pregnant or laid eggs before. She has been straining and I can see an obvious swelling. She squeaks as she strains and I can see the egg but as she stops straining the vent closes and egg gets sucked back.

Soak her for 15-20 minutes in a warm Epsom salt solution, deep enough to submerge her vent. Afterwards, apply a small amount of mineral or olive oil around her vent. This should help pass the egg. If not, she will need to be seen by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet.
