Hello. My dog has had a mucous discharge from her nose for over a year. 4-5/day, slightly green, goes away with antibiotics but comes back shortly after. Xrays of skull, nasal passageway, chest show nothing. Blood test showed elevated white blood cells and liver enzymes. Mood, appetite, weight, energy all normal. Any ideas what this may be?

This could be a fungal infection or an antibiotic resistant bacterial infection. If bacterial and fungal cultures have not yet been performed, I would recommend that you request them. I would also suggest a consultation with a veterinary internist for a rhinoscopy with possible biopsies. You can find one in your area on www.acvim.org.

Poor Hubcap, at this stage at may be neccessary to perform further tests such as culture of the discharge, endoscopy or MRI to identify exactly where the infection is coming from and why it is not resolving completely with medication. Foreign bodies such as grass seeds and tumors or cysts can all cause ongoing infection/discharge which recurs despite appropriate antibiotic treatment. Schedule a recheck and consider referral to a specialist if required
