Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 3 years and 9 months old | 80 lbs

Hi I had a question, my german shepherd who is 3 1/2 years old, around 80 pounds. today he was walking weird outside and lifting his back paw constantly, checked his paw and saw one of his nails was breaking, like turned the wrong direction and look liked it was going to come off. I slowly touched it it did not fall off, he was in pain, pulling away. Today I made him rest and was keeping an eye on it. I just noticed the long part of the nail was gone with a short nub left and a red area exposed

Usually once the nail falls off they are much more comfortable. Make sure to keep the nail bed clean by soaking in a small tub of warm water and Epsom salts a few times a day. Within several days it will harden and with in a few weeks you should notice the nail starting to regrow. If at any time it becomes more painful, or oozes, or develops an odor then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
