Should I wait to get another dog if my senior has spinal stenosis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 11 years old | 40 lbs

My 11 year old dog was just diagnosed with spinal stenosis. I wanted to introduce another rescue before he passed. Now that he has this diagnosis should I wait to get another dog? Is it better to let him be the only dog or to give him a another doggie companion?"

So sorry to hear Kona is having this issue. This is a personal decision but my opinion is that you should wait. A dog with spinal stenosis can be unstable walking around and another dog could cause him harm by knocking him down or jumping on him or fighting with him, etc. You don't need him getting hurt or being in more pain. I think you should focus all your time, money and energy on Kona and worry about getting another dog later. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
