Why is my puppy dry heaving and coughing when excited or playing?

My puppy seems to be dry heaving when he plays around or gets excited. It just started maybe 30 minutes ago. He was fine before then. The first time he started dry heaving he threw up and after that he would only dry heave with a slight cough as if something was stuck in his throat when he got excited or ran around. He's fine when he is calm. What could it be ? Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 3 months and 7 days old | 20 lbs

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Achilles may have a respiratory infection called kennel cough (or tracheobronchitis). It is like a cold with a cough humans get and causes a tickle in the throat and dry heaving type behavior. I recommend taking him to a vet for a confirmation. They may need to take a xray of his chest to make sure its not pneumonia or something stuck in his throat. If it is kennel cough, he needs medications to prevent pneumonia and to help his cough.
