What to expect after my dog gets dewormed and vaccinated? Is it safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 3 months old | 4.8 lbs

I recently took my dog to the vet and she drank deworming medicine and she got 3 shots. What can I expect these next few days? I also want to know if it is safe for my family and I to get close to her.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! For 24-48 hours after her vaccines, she may be tired or sore in the area where the vaccines were given. If you notice shes lethargic, vomiting, or having diarrhea, I would contact the vet that gave the vaccines. The dewormer will kill any intestinal parasites she may have. You may see worms pass in her feces. This is normal. You and your family can be around her. I would recommend cleaning up her stools right away, and washing your hands before eating. Kisses to Lucy!
