My cat has bloody diarrhea and is skinny. How can I help him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | neutered | 5 lbs

Do you have any recommendations for what we could do to nurture him back to health. When I pick him up he is extremely skinny he used to be a good weight but he’s scary skinny now. He has diarrhea somewhere in our house everyday because he can’t eat without being sick. I really need help on what to do. He’s been bloody diarrhea for about 6 years now. He is a great cat and I need to know some tips on how to nurture him and make him better

This is a long time for a cat to have diarrhea and the signs of blood and weight-loss indicate that he likely has a disease of the intestines like inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, or dietary intolerance/allergy. Considering that he is very skinny, the best thing you can do is take him to the vet for an evaluation. The vet will be able to help narrow-down the cause of this and prescribe the necessary medication to keep him from losing any further body condition. Without knowing the specific cause of this, it's unfortunately not possible to know what will make him look and feel normal again. For now, you can see if it helps to feed a bland food (cooked boneless chicken or tuna). You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. For more information, I recommend you read the article at the link below. https://www.petcoach.co/article/most-common-causes-of-diarrhea-in-cats/ I hope this helps and Sterling gets better soon.
