My 6-week-old puppy: How to care for her health, train, and sleep?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 18 days old | 6.3 lbs

So I got a boxer puppy for Christmas and my fiance didn't know that they had to be a certain age and brought home a six week old. What precautions do I need to take and how can I help her to grow and mature properly? Also how old is a good time to start her training I'm already socializing her as much as possible. Also at night I find she feels she needs to sleep up against me and seems to have more nightmares when she doesn't. Is this normal behavior?

At six weeks her immune system is very vulnerable to disease and she must be isolated away from unvaccinated dogs and exposure to wildlife until she is fully protected - i recommend an urgent vet check to assess her vaccination and deworming history and to make sure she is otherwise well. Her training can begin right away and it is important for her to develop a sense of independence and security away from you to prevent separation anxiety as she gets older
