Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 1 month old | 42 lbs
Hello, my Labradoodle was recently bred and is 37 weeks pregnant. Our veterinarian does not have a lot of experience with breeding dogs, thus my question to you: Irie is scratching her nipples excessively and I am worried that all this scratching might harm her growing puppies. At this stage the fetuses are within the uterine wall and I believe they are well-protected, but I guess I just need reassurance. I am avoiding meds during her pregnancy but perhaps there is another way to soothe her.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I hope you meant 37 days and not weeks, since a dog's pregnancy is about 60-65 days. Scratching should not harm the puppies as this is a normal behavior in dogs so the body is prepared for that movement. I would recommend making sure she isn't scratching for medical reasons that need to be addressed, like fleas. Good luck and kisses to Irie!
