My dog takes Vetmedin. Why is it given every 12 hours if half-life is short?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 12 years and 3 months old

How long does a 1.25 mg vetmedin stay in a dogs system. I read the half life is 2 hours so why is it only administered every 12 hours? Wouldn't it be out of the system after like 6 hours?

Interesting question! The half life refers to clearance of the original drug from the blood circulation, some of this becomes bound inside cells and some gets broken down into metabolites which are also effective in their own right therefore the medication is effective for longer than the half life data would initially appear to indicate. It is important it is given on an empty stomach, one hour before food. All medications should be given as prescribed and dosing intervals should not be adjusted without consulting with the treating vet
