Why is my dog limping and avoiding weight on his front paw?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 3 years and 5 months old | 78 lbs

Charlie started limping yesterday and looks like he is avoiding weight on his front right paw or leg. The limping got worse throughout the day. I looked bottom of his paw and the pads look ok and I don't see anything stuck in there. I doubt he broke something but I know he is in pain though because he keeps leaning up against me and panting. Gave him tramadol to hold him over...Waiting for vet to open today so I can call and have him looked at. Any thoughts on what this could be?

Poor Charlie. There are several reasons why they can limp and have a painful leg like a broken toenail, a sprain (soft tissue injury), a small or large fracture, and even a dislocated joint. Your vet will be able to localize the pain and take X-rays if needed. Your vet will be able to get him in an anti-inflammatory that you can give with the tramadol. Your vet will also likely recommend strict confinement to help him rest so it can heal. If there is a fracture, your vet may recommend a splint. I hope this helps!
