My puppy is coughing after daycare. Is it kennel cough? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 11 months and 6 days old | 51 lbs

My puppy has been coughing since I picked her up from day care. It first happened when she ran up the stairs and then again when she was playing later with her ball and again when we were laying on the couch. It sounds like she has something caught in her throat when she coughs but hasn’t coughed anything up she ate most of her dinner and drank water but didn’t throw up anything. Should I call the vet in the morning to see if they want to see her?

It sounds like Hazel has kennel cough. Yes, you should get her to your vet for an exam. It is very common for dogs to catch this at daycare, boarding facilities, grooming parlors, dog parks. Basically anywhere there are lots of dogs together in a restricted space. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=600 Hope this helps. Best wishes.

It could be that Hazel is suffering from a respiratory infection or from kennel cough. I would have her seen by a vet today if possible for this. The vet can diagnose if she is suffering from a respiratory infection or kennel cough, and can prescribe her medications to treat her symptoms. In the meantime, if she seems congested, you can try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections.
