Is Heartgard brown (51-100 lbs) safe for my dog now under 50 lbs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 50 lbs

Hello. I had a question about heartgard. My dog is a little less than 50lbs by now because she had to lose weight due to hip dysplasia. Can I still give her the heartgard brown since the brown one is for 51-100lbs? We still have 4 months worth of the brown one. Or do I really have to buy the green one for her now?

Good for you for taking some weight off Leila to help with her hips! I know that can be challending. In general, the amount of ivermectin in Heartgard is very low, and it is not a problem for a dog that is just under 50 pounds to have the 51-100 pound dose. However, some dog breeds are sensitive to ivermectin, so I would certainly ask your veterinarian about their recommendation for Leila just to be on the safe side. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
