My dog guards his bone and growls. How can I stop this behavior?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 5 years and 10 months old | 100 lbs

Hey, I have a dog, he is a blue nose pit bull, and we gave him a huge bone but now he doesn’t even chew it he just guards it and when someone gets close he growls and walks away with it. My dad thinks he is just old and can’t chew it but his jaws are powerful I️ doubt that’s the case. I’m afraid he’ll stay like that for a long time i need help.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Five is not old. It sounds like he is being protective of the bone and he is walking away with it because he doesn’t want anyone to take it. Since he is being aggressive about it, I would recommend finding a way to get the bone away from him and not giving it back. If he cannot play with his toys in a safe manner then he cannot have them. I am afraid the behavior could get worse. Good luck and kisses to Dartos!
