My dog has kidney stones. What calcium-free glucosamine can he take?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 8 months old | 60 lbs

Hello! My dog is extremely prone to kidney stones and had surgery 3 years ago. They found stones and crystals lining his bladder as well. He has since been put on the urinary so diet. He is now getting older and our vet recommended a flavorless glucosamine tablet for him to take. However, all the ones I seem to find have calcium in them which seems like would be bad for a dog prone to kidney stones. Can anyone recommend a brand I can get for him? Thank you!

Very good of you to think about that. The answer depends on type of stones that Leo has had. I have included information on the 2 most common types below. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=460 http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=662 If Leo had calcium oxalate stones, we can't really tell you that doing a glucosamine supplement with calcium would make them worse, but you're right that it might not be worth the risk. You might need to use a veterinary product like Cosequin (http://www.cosequin.com/dogs) or Dasuquin (http://www.dasuquin.com/en/products/) to find a product without calcium. You could also consider an injectable medication like Adequan (https://www.adequancanine.us) as a good alternative. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
