How often should I deworm my dog to prevent intestinal parasites?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 10 months old | 50 lbs

My dog hasn't been given deworming pills in over a year, should I start giving on a regular 3 months interval or should I give it to him more often than that?

Is Captain Jack Sparrow on heartworm prevention? This is the monthly pill that prevents against heartworm disease. It also prevents against the most common intestinal parasites. If he is on heartworm prevention I would just recommend yearly stool samples to make sure he didn't pick up an intestinal parasite that the heartworm prevention does not cover. If you do not give heartworm prevention then I would recommend yearly stool samples to make sure that Captain Jack Sparrow doesn't have intestinal parasites. You can deworm him with a general dewormer like Pyrantel every 6 months also. Understand Pyrantel doesn't cover every intestinal parasite.
