Although there are no hard-and-fast rules, we suspect that allowing puppies to exercise at intense levels such as running 5/week may predispose them to joint issues. Because of this, most veterinarians recommend waiting until puppies are skeletally mature at 1 year of age before they start routinely exercise such as daily runs. Make sure your dog is fully vaccinated at that time as well.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Echo. You want to wait for his growth plates to fully close before you start any serious running with him. This is especially true of running on hard surfaces such as side walks, bike paths, etc. It is typically best to wait until 12-18 months of age to start building serious running miles. Long walks and hikes are appropriate at this age. Frisbee and fetch are great activities to burn energy. You can stand on top of hill and throw the ball down to make it harder for him. I am a runner and waited to start my dog until 18 months of age. His joints have held up very well and still runs with me at 11 years of age! I hope this information helps.
