Is mouth feeding my pet bird harmful? How do I get it to eat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | 9 months and 5 days old | 0.15 lbs

Hi, I have a question about feeding my pet, most of the time I mouth feed him, but sometimes he eats by himself And I just discovered that bird owner should not mouth feed them, why is that? And I'm afraid i've been spoiled him that he won't eat by himself. Thanks in advance

Hi, There are 2 main reasons not to mouth-feed Chip. The first is bacteria and yeast that can be transferred from us to them. The second is that in nature mouth feeding only occurs between adult birds and their young, or between a pair of birds as part of their breeding behavior. Chip is no longer a baby. You also don't want him to see as his mate as this may cause behavioral/hormonal problems in the future.
