Dog's chronic knee wound not healing with antibiotics. Is there a better treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 9 years and 10 months old | 72 lbs

My dog has had a wound on the inside of his knee for several months now. He is on his second round of antibiotic but it doesn’t seem to be helping. I have him on an anti inflammatory pain reliever and a sleeve to allow it to breathe yet prevents him from licking. Are we going down the right treatment path?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am afraid that this wound may take more local therapy for it to really heal. This means local cleaning, debridement and potentially closing it with stitches. At the same time, I think antibiotics at this point should be chosen based on a culture to be more specific in terms of what is being used specifically targeting the infectious organism. If treated appropriately, this is likely going to heal well. Good luck!
