How to keep my anxious dog safe from noise & separation fear?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | spayed | 8 years and 6 months old | 13 lbs

My 7 year old female jack russell terrior mix has bad separation anxiety and a severe fear of gun shots and loud noises like that...she tears through plastic crates and bends the bars until she can squeeze out of the metal ones. She takes trazodone when needed but what else can we try to keep her safe and happy when she's scared or alone

You can buy a thunder shirt or something similar that is snug fitting to provide comfort. Leaving a white noise machine on or music can help keep her calm and drown out other noises so she will. It bear or react to them. You may need to talk to your vet about a daily medicine such as fluoxetine instead of as needed trazadone to help
