My dog hit his head. What symptoms mean he needs a vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | neutered | 7 years and 1 month old | 17 lbs

Our mini dachshund was head slammed into our coffee table by our 54 lb Aussie. He was not knocked out but immediately started looking up towards the ceiling and turning in a slow circle. His pupils are even and reacting as they should to light and he is awake and walking normally, no vomiting. He does not appear to be sleepy either. What else should we be looking for to determine whether he needs to see a vet?

Monitor for any vomiting or trouble walking or a head tilt. If you notice any eye movements jumping back and forth or a head tilt, that is a sign of head trauma. If you notice no signs after 12 -24 hours then you have nothing to worry about
