My bird fell in oil. How do I safely clean her matted feathers?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 9 months old

My pet bird 2 days ago fell in my moms pan of cooking oil(not hot) we have tried taking it off and we gave her baths but only some came off. She didn't eat for a full day until yesterday(Thank the Lord) she is always preening herself and is quieter now. We dont know what to do. The vet isn't an option since my parents don't trust the vet in our area. Her feathers are matted together but not as bad as the beginning.

Hi, I would recommend a warm bath with Dawn dish soap to help remove the oil. Keep Bert warm and away from drafts. I do strongly recommend an exam by a veterinarian to make sure there isn’t anything more serious going on, and you can find other bird veterinarians online at AAV.org. Good luck!
