Why is my dog tired, limping, and rejecting her newborn puppies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 40 lbs

I have a one year and two month old Bassett Hound mix who just gave birth to six puppies 3-4 days ago. At first she caught on right away and never left their side but now she seems tired and uninterested. She walks off often and isn’t showing them near as much attention as before. She began limping yesterday and yelping while they’re feeding today. She keeps coming and sitting at our feet and I’m afraid she’s ill or is rejecting them. Please help

She may have an infection in her uterus or a retained placenta that is making her feel bad. It is best to get her checked as this may cause her to be sick and not take care of the puppies. You can start supplementing the puppies with mills replacer if she is not sitting long enough and make sure they stay warm if she is not staying with them
