Is it safe to give my dog human hydroxyzine for separation anxiety?

There are a number of medications that can help with separation anxiety, but we never know how a dog is going to react to a medication until we try it. Sometimes we will use prescription anti-anxiety medications because an over the counter medication like Benadryl does not work. And some dogs get hyper on Benadryl instead of sedated, so you always need to try it first. There are long acting drugs like prozac, zoloft, clomicalm, etc and then short acting medications like trazadone, acepromazine, xanax, etc. These drugs need to be prescribed by your Vet and work best with behavioral training. Some dogs respond well to treatments / supplements / desensitization and other do not respond well. I recommend desensitizing in addition to calming supplements before resorting to anti-anxiety prescription drugs. For desensitizing, I recommend getting ready on a day that you will be home and act like you are leaving. Rather than leaving though, stick around the house, walk outside for about 5 minutes and then come back in so that Jack sees you are not leaving every time you get ready. There is no one "best" medication for separation anxiety. Treatment involves a multi-modal approach of medication, diet, training and training aids such as adaptil. I'm not purposely being vague but separation anxiety is a complex issue and there is not a magic cure or medication. My own dog is on 3 different daily medications, supplements, wears a pheromone collar and is crated or boarded at my vet clinic if left alone more than an hour. Dealing with separation anxiety takes time and patience and commitment. It may take several medication adjustments to find the correct dose or treatments that work for each individual dog. It sounds as if Baxter would benefit from some medication to help his anxiety. I would recommend talking with your vet about starting him on an anti-anxiety medication like Fluoxetine. He would likely also benefit from another drug like Trazodone in the short term while the Fluoxetine levels are normalizing in the body (which can take 4-6 weeks). You should also consider increasing his exercise routine. Taking him on a fast paced walk for 20-30 minutes prior to your departure will help drain some of his nervous energy.
