Why is my pregnant mouse bleeding but not giving birth yet?

Your friend’s mice were probably just startled for some reason when you approached them today. I would recommend that you continue to engage and interact with them regularly to help gain their trust. The mice are in a relatively new environment and are probably very prone to stress. I would also recommend separating the pregnant mouse from the other two mice. Bloody discharge is definitively a worrying sign and should be ideally checked as soon as possible by your local veterinarian as abnormal labor and miscarriage is possible. Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. It is hard to know if she is fat or pregnant. If she has been in with a male in the past month she very well could be pregnant. The other female mouse might eat the babies, so I would separate the mice if she does have babies. Best of luck with your little ones!

It sounds like this could be a prolapse. I suggest you get her to a vet for an exam. If you want to post again with some photos we may be able to help you better. The photo you tried to post did not show up.

Rats can bleed a little during pup delivery - so this could be normal. Has it been at least 21 days since the male was introduced into the cage? If not, it has not been long enough for her to be ready for delivery. In either case, keep a close eye on her - if she is delivering, pups should appear relatively quickly. If nothing happens soon, I recommend taking her to the veterinarian. Meanwhile you can support her by making sure she has some nesting material and wet food easily available- this way each bite of food provides calories and liquid. I hope she has had pups by now!! Hello, & thank you for using Boop by Petco. Oh dear, poor Xena. I can not tell you definitively what happened, but it does sound like she aborted a fetus. This, of course, is not a normal thing & may indicate that your cat is unwell, or she may have a uterine infection. I would urge you to have her examined, especially if you hope to save the rest of her litter ( if still possible ). Otherwise, please consider having her spayed to prevent a serious infection since she may not be able to maintain a normal pregnancy. Take care.

Cocoa does look pregnant. Gestation is about 3 weeks. She built her nest where she feels most comfortable and secure. This is no cause for concern. Try not to disturb it and when the pups (baby mice) come, do not disturb the nest for the first two weeks. You'll need to keep Ghost separate, because Cocoa can mate again within days of delivery. The pups will wean around 3-4 weeks and should be separated into male and female groups shortly after. They can breed as early as 6 weeks of age.

The only way to be sure Lucy has a retained fetus is by doing an x-ray. Sometimes a vet can palpate the abdomen and feel a baby inside but this can be tricky for even a trained vet. If Lucy truly does have a retained fetus for going on 10 days she would likely be very ill. She probably would have an infection in her uterus and would be very lethargic and not eating. If Lucy is acting completely normal she probably does not have a retained fetus. If Lucy is showing any of these symptoms she will need to visit your vet and a surgery may need to be performed to remove the retained fetus.

I recommend separating the male as soon as you are sure that the female is pregnant, because females can get pregnant again very shortly after giving birth. It is important to keep the pups quiet and calm, to prevent the mother from eating them when stressed. You should also not touch the pups until they are about 14 days old. There are several types of nesting material available in pet stores, or you could use pieces of paperCut up into small strips. The pups should be separated from their mother when they are about 14 to 21 days old. At this point they should be able to eat normal adult mouse food.
