Should my dog stay on urinary food after kidney stones long-term?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 8 months old | 60 lbs

Hello! My dog had severe kidney stones and surgery 3 years ago. Our vet put him on urinary so and he has been eating it since. However, I’m reading a lot of info that he should not be eating it anymore. Our vet has never said anything about whether or not he should still be on it. I’m just curious if he should be or if it’s bad for him to still eat it?

Poor Leo! If he has a history of bladder or kidney stones, then I strongly recommend for him to stay on the urinary food. This food is designed to lower the risk of future stones. It does not prevent them 100% of the time but it definitely decreases the risk. Other foods are not specifically designed for this problem and therefore will increase his risk of having stones again in the future. I hope this helps!
