Why does my cat act stressed when I try to brush his severe mats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

Well his fur is pretty bad. Its not just mats but tangled real bad too. Under his chin his fur is like some one put twsties in his fur that I can follow all the way around his ear and when I work on his mat on his back about hip high the fur around his shoulder will move. Its really strange. And during these times he does A LOT of yawning, has to eat right away(like he wants to make the chewing motion), and sharpens his claws. All in that order. His meow is very quiet and weak.

Poor Mister! It sounds like it may stress him and cause him to be really itchy when your try to brush out his Matts. If his Matts are really severe and thick, you may be better off just having him shaved and then get into the habit of brushing him daily as his hair grows back out. Matts can be really uncomfortable as they pull on the skin and trap oils which make them itchy. Also, the shoulder movement you are noticing is likely just his normal reaction to you tugging on his skin/fur. I hope this helps!
