My dog has trouble walking after vaccine. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Eurasier | Male | unneutered | 53 lbs

Our dog (Eurasier, 15 mos.) received the combined DHLPP and Rabies vaccination on Thursday. His appetite is now lower than normal, as are his activity level and mood. Our vet said this is not uncommon and could last several days, but to bring him back in if we observe anything else. Tonight he suddenly developed problems getting up and walking (back legs). Our vet's office is closed now and will be closedtomorrow. Should we be worried? Help!

It is very uncommon for vaccines to cause trouble walking - most side effects include soreness at the injection site which is mild and decreased activity. The signs you describe can be due to trauma or neurological issues. Most towns/cities have an emergency clinic that is open 24 hours which you can take Bass to if you are concerned that he is not feeling well.

While a dog can have some pain after getting vaccines, it shouldn't be so severe that they are having trouble walking. This could be an abnormal reaction to the vaccines, and I would take Harley into a vet immediately to get checked out. Best of luck.
