Why is my senior dog listless and not herself despite vet's OK?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 10 years and 4 months old | 49 lbs

Nala was hit by a car at 1yr and hip replacement surgery. Since she has been afraid of the street. She wouldn't even get close to it. Since September, she has gone out in the street, she has been diagnosed with arthritis and placed on a pain regiment (Truprofen 50mg 2x daily). She does not leave her bed, uses the bathroom in the house and does not wag her tail anymore. The vet has told us that she is perfectly healthy but she is not herself. Her eyes are dead and i cant take it, Can you advise?

It's possible there is still some underlying pain, or even an internal issue causing Nala's symptoms. You didn't mention if any tests had been done beyond a basic exam, so getting bloodwork, X-rays, etc may be a good next step for figuring out the cause of her problems. If your vet can't find anything, seeking out a second opinion or a specialist may be another step. You've listed Nala as ten years old, so she is well into her senior years as well. Older dogs can sometimes suffer incontinence and brain changes as they age which can sometimes cause the symptoms you are seeing. Medication and prescription diets can sometimes address this, as well as lifestyle changes at home. However, if Nala is truly feeling unwell, or completely listless, speaking with your vet about quality of life is best.
