How to get dogs to use outdoor shelters, stop fighting & eat carrots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

How do I get my dogs to get in their houses? When it’s pouring outside they won’t get in them and I can’t bring them in because they’ll fight. I’ve tried throwing treats in there they’ll get them and leave. They get in their houses sometimes but half the time they’d rather sit in the rain. Also how can I get them to eat carrots?

If they know the houses are there, which it seems like they do since they use them periodically, they will go in them if/when they want to. I would not be too concerned about them staying out in the rain. As long as they have a warm, dry shelter to retreat to they should be fine. Since they are prone to fighting I would recommend that you have 2 separate houses for them and put them apart so they won’t feel like they are in close quarters with each other. You may also want to make the houses more comfortable by adding some bedding, blankets or shavings inside. And as for the carrots, these are a great snack! Most dogs love them so you shouldn’t have any issue trying to get them to eat them. If you act very excited when giving them this ‘treat’ then they will be excited too. I think small baby carrots work best for treats. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
