My senior cat refuses his prescription food. What can I feed him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 17 years and 11 months old | 9.5 lbs

Hi! Tony has been eating hills prescription G/D for a couple of months but has decided to not like it anymore. I’ve also tried Hills Rx J/D and Royal canin senior consult... doesn’t like those either. Can you recommend any other prescription senior diets? He always falls back on my other kitty’s Royal canin rx selected protein rabbit pea but that’s not really an appropriate diet for tony nor is it a senior diet. Thx!!

Hello. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. To tell you the truth, at almost 18 years of age, I would feed Tony anything he wants. If he enjoys your other kitty's food, then let him have it. It is much more stressful for you & for Tony to insist he eat something he does not like. Prescription diets are great, but only if the pet will eat them, & it is far more important to keep good calories & nutrition going into Tony. The rabbit & pea diet is nutritionally complete & fine for Tony. Take care.
