My dog's skin tags are bleeding, smelly. Are they serious? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 11 years and 3 months old | 32 lbs

I think my dog has skin tags but they keep getting scabs and sometimes bleed. One in particular is smelly and has brown goop in it along with blood. Is this really a skin tag or something more serious? How can I help care for these growths? He’s a 11 yr old cocker spaniel mix

These growths look like skin tags in the pictures. We can never be 100% certain without a biopsy. If they keep breaking open and bleeding then I recommend removing them. The reason for removing them is just to stop him from scratching them and having them break open. Otherwise just keep the growths clean.
