My 9-month-old dog is pregnant. What are the risks of early delivery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 17 days old | 15 lbs

My dog is rat terrier mix and got stuck with my sisters mini schnauzer. This is her first time in heat and they were stuck twice. I do believe she is pregnant! She’s almost 9 months old do you think it will cause her any problems?

If he is much larger than her then she may have a hard time passing the puppies as they can be too larger. They are pregnant for 58-63 days. Around day 45 you can get an X-ray to get an estimate of how many to expect and to make sure none are to large to pass. It is not ideal that she has bred so young but mainly the concern is the sie is the puppies
