My dog has a lump. Is dog papilloma contagious? Should he avoid other dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 1 month old | 38 lbs

Took my dog to the vet yesterday for a lump (previously asked about on here). He THINKS it’s papilloma but we’re having it removed and sent to the lab to be sure next week. In the mean time, if it IS papilloma aren’t they contagious between dogs? Does that mean I shouldn’t take my dog to visit my friend who has a dog?

If Bradley does have a papilloma this can be contagious to other dogs so I would recommend not visiting your friend's dog. It takes about a week for the biopsy results to come back so I would recommend no other dogs for that time period. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
