My old cat is suddenly very hungry and aggressive. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | RagaMuffin | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

Lately my cat "Buddy " lets me know that he wants his canned wet food by digging his claws into my neck. He knows I don't like it because I will say "no "! and pretend to hit him on the head by raising my hand up over his head he drops his head down like he's been hit and winces. After a couple minuets he's back to it again! this is a new bad behavior. I've tried lightly smacking him it doesn't work . spraying him with water would only make him not trust me. he is old .

Hi there. If Buddy is older and this is a new behavior then I suspect he could have an underlying health issue. It is very common in cats to get some diseases as they age. The two that come to mind right away are hyperthyroidism (elevated thyroid level) and diabetes. Both can cause a cat to be very hungry which makes them impatient when it comes to eating. These diseases are easily diagnosed with simple blood testing. So, I suggest you get Buddy to your vet for an exam and some blood testing as soon as you can. If health issues can be ruled out then you can talk to your vet about the behaviorial aspect. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
