My dog's poop is discolored and soft. Is it worms or dog food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 70 lbs

Hey I was just wondering what could cause this color and form of her crap. I was thinking worms, but they don’t have any symptoms. All of my dogs have this color, but not in this form and theirs is solid. They all act and eat normal, haven’t lost any weight, and you wouldn’t know they had a problem until looking at this. Could it be the dog food? I feed the big ones ol Roy and the little one pedigree small dog food. I can’t afford to take them to the vet, so what can I do to treat this.

It could be worms so you may want to consider deworming them all. Most dogs that have worms have no symptoms. Without doing a fecal test with your vet there is not going to be a way to know for sure. It will not hurt to go ahead and deworm them even if they have no worms. Just keep in mind that a general deworm is just that, general. It will not kill every type of worms that they could possibly have. Only the most common ones. Be sure to get the correct size for each dog. https://www.healthypets.com/safeguard-4-canine-dewormer-4-gm-large-dogs-3-pack.html The other thing you may want to do for a couple weeks is give them all a probiotic. This will help give them "good bacteria" to help with digestion. You can give any probiotic made for dogs but the best one in my opinion would be one of these: http://www.allivet.com/p-1130-purina-pro-plan-veterinary-diets-fortiflora-dog-supplement-box-of-30.aspx https://www.healthypets.com/advita-probiotic-dogs-30-packets.html It could also be diet related. Ol Roy is probably my least favorite diet for dogs. The Pedigree diet is OK but again, not the best. If you could afford a better diet I would recommend you do that. I would suggest one of the Purina diets: ProPlan, Purine One or even Dog Chow. If you do change diets, do it slowly over a week's time as to not cause any more GI upset. Hope this helps. If still no improvement after the changes you will need to seek the help of a local vet. Best wishes.
