My puppy licked chocolate hot cocoa flakes. Is it toxic for dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 6 months and 28 days old | 20 lbs

I have a 20 pound Schnauzer, and while making some chocolate flake hot cocoa, I spooned some into my cup, and some fell on the floor. Before I could bend down to clean it up, my puppy is licking the floor. I don’t believe he got more than just a few flakes, but I still am concerned. I have attached pics of the flakes and hot cocoa used. Any suggestions?

1 oz (about 30 g) would be needed for Chester to really have any problems. The container says that 5 TBsp = 41 g, so he would have to consume 4 or so tablespoons to have a problem. I think he should be ok with just a few flakes. Thank you for using Pet Coach and enjoy your hot chocolate!
