My dog is shaking and won't eat. Should I go to the emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Blue Heeler | Male | 9 years and 8 months old | 50 lbs

Jelly has been shaking uncontrollably, timid to eat, licking his lips more than normal, disinterested in food or snacks. A month ago his back legs stopped working and it scared him and us. No problems since then. Trying to decide if we can wait until the morning to go to the vet or to rush him to the emergency vet now

It seems like Jelly is having some sort of neurological problem that has been causing these signs. It's difficult to know how serious this is without seeing him, but uncontrollable shaking is concerning enough to warrant a visit to the vet tonight. It may be worthwhile to discuss this with one of our Pet coach vets by requesting a consult if you still have questions or concerns. This way the vet can get a better idea of Jelly's condition and offer some more helpful advice. I hope that helps and Jelly gets better soon.
