How to train a ferret to wear a harness when he refuses treats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | neutered | 4 months and 20 days old

I’m trying to get my ferret to be comfortable wearing a harness so that I can later add in a leash, however he refuses to keep it on long. He either slides out of it(It cannot tighten any further), rolls in circles until I take it off, or gets his bottom tooth stuck in it while trying to bite it free. Is it too soon to be trying this? I’ve tried using Bandit treats to persuade him, but he refuses to take any type of treats as well.

Sorry you are having this issue with Eddie. My two suggestions would be to make sure you have the right type of harness and try a different type of treat that he REALLY likes that will distract him for at least 30 seconds. Harness suggestion: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=6067+11281+17391&pcatid=17391 As you can see, it does not go between the front legs. That may be the issue you are having. For a treat, try some canned cat food. He may like that better. Here is a good reference article on training. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?articleid=2064 Hope this helps. Best wishes!
