Puppy recovering from parvo: Is black, tarry diarrhea normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 10 days old | 4 lbs

Hi, my baby girl got parvo, we took her to the vet and she was hospitalized for 3 days, we came to pick her up today (she was there since Monday) and she seemed perfect well better than before. The vet said Nayla would do lose stool for the first couple of days, due to all the medicine but as the days passes it should become more hard. But when she got home she did diarrhea like black, I wanted to verify with you all is what that was normal like the vet said?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Nayla! I am very glad Nayla is on the road to recovery! Yes, the diarrhea will persist for several days after parvo viral infections. More due to the fact that intestinal lining is what is affected from virus. It takes time for the lining to repair itself and for absorption to return to normal. Very black tarry stool indicates upper gastro-intestinal bleeding. It could be residual from stomach ulceration. If she has more black stool I would call your Vet and ask if that is the color of her diarrhea while she was hospitalized. They may want to add pepcid or another antacid if she isn't on one. I hope this helps and I wish Nayla continued improvement!
