My dog got a double dose of meds. Now has bloody stools. Sucrate or Maalox?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 3 years old | 3.3 lbs

Chiyo is taking prednisone & granudoxy.. after a granudoxy double dose (by mistake), he is showing upset stomach symptoms (mild vomiting with a bit mucus bloody stools) and he is not active as usually.. The vet is recommending sucrate gel (0.1 g twice per day) OR maalox plus (2ml twice per day) and to continue normally with his medicines.. What do you recommend (sucrate gel or maalox plus)?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Chlyo! I would chose the maalox. I would also consider a 12-24 hour fast and then restart feeding as a bland diet. If the blood persists in Chlyo's stool I would ask your Vet to prescribe meteronidazole. If he won't eat and continues to vomit your Vet should recheck him I hope this helps and I wish Chlyo a speedy recovery!
