Am I making a terrible mistake getting a new kitten after FIP death?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Female | unspayed | 3 months old | 3 lbs

We had a kitten (5 1/2 months old) that had to be put down last week due to presumed FIP (wet). The vet said it was not contagious. So we've put a deposit on another Russian Blue kitten. I'm throwing out all the litter boxes and getting new ones and disinfecting the area before she comes. But then I got to reading up on it. We have another cat, about 7 months old who is fine. But are we making a terrible mistake? Could this kitten catch it from the one we have?

So FIP is technically from a virus, however, most cats are exposed at some point in their life (especially if from a cattery or shelter). However, only a select few will mutate to become FIP. We don’t know why this happens, or how to prevent it. Could it happen again? Yes. But very unlikely. I have been a veterinarian for 11 years and have only had 1 FIP kitten patient. I know it’s easier said then done to not worry. Sometimes I find it helpful to give myself some grieving time and my worries seem to be less the more “ready” I am for a new Pet. I’m so sorry about your kitten, and I hope your new addition is spunky and healthy for many many years!! Thank you for using Pet Coach.
