My puppy has kennel cough. Is a wet cough normal if she's okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | spayed | 5 months and 1 day old | 17 lbs

My pupoy was recently diagnosed with kennel cough. She's taking Doxycycline. she went from having several hacking coughs with some mucus/foam from time to time to only coughing a few times a day, but they sound "wet" and nothing comes up such as mucus. Should I take her back to the vet or is this normal? She's eating, sleeping, playing and going to the restroom normally.

Hello, it sounds like Eclaire is overall getting better. The wet cough may be a red herring. As long as her over all health is improving and continues to do so, then you do not need to bring her back to her veterinarian. If she suddenly begins to do worse, no longer wants to eat or develops a worsening cough with nasal discharge then she should be re-evaluated immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.
