My Yorkie scratched her face raw. What to do? How long to heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 24 days old | 6 lbs

My yorkie scratched the side of her face and we noticed she had matted hair. We have combed the hair out and shaved the area. We noticed her skin looks raw from scratching. We have cleaned the area and put antibiotic ointment on it. Is there anything we should do? How long should this take to heal?

Hello, sorry to hear about Bella. This should heal within the next 3-5 days. In addition to what you are doing, you can place an e-collar on Bella to protect this area further from any more scratching. If the area does not heal, if she develops any swelling, pain, bleeding or any other discharge then she should be evaluated by your veterinarian. Hope this helps and best of luck.
