My parakeet was briefly near cigarette smoke. Will my bird be sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | 3 months and 2 days old

I accidentally lit a cigarette while being in the same room as my parakeet but I immediately left the room and walked outside. Will my parakeet still get sick from the brief exposure? He is my first bird.

As long as you left the room immediately and he wasn't directly exposed to the smoke, he should be fine. Make sure to air the room out well, wash your hands before you handle him again and keep him away from any nicotine products in your house, nicotine can kill your bird. Signs of nicotine poisoning include: twitching, excitedness, panting, salivation, vomiting, increased heartrate, collapse, coma and cardiac arrest.
