My young dog has an ear lump. Vet drops aren't helping. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Female | spayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 69.2 lbs

A lump has appeared in my 18month Rottweilers ear, she’s currently having ear drops twice a day(recommended from our vet to treat the lump), but it doesn’t seem to be helping at all? Two photos for comparison of ears, the yellow in the one with the lump is just residue from the ear drops. She is otherwise healthy and happy- normal behaviour, active, regular appetite etc..

Hello, that lump appears very similar to a histiocytoma. These tumors occur in young dogs primarily, are benign, and resolve on their own within several weeks. This should be confirmed by obtaining a sample from this tumor with a needle or by obtaining a biopsy. Have your veterinarian re-check Lola, especially if her lump is not resolving with medications and talk about sampling the lump. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Poor Lola. With her being young, this could be a benign mass called a histiocytoma. These masses usually go away on their own after a few months. Unfortunately it could also be a mass from infection or cancer. I would see if you vet is able to do an aspirate of the mass to look at the cell under the microscope. They may not be able to if it is too small. If so, they should be able to get a better idea of whether or not it needs to be surgically removed. Of course, to be extra safe you can have it surgically removed and sent to the lab to ensure it is benign. I hope this helps!
